The attached link to Jon and Kim's Produce Market is the final project completed as required by EME 6936: Web Design during the Summer semester of 2012 under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Ann Barron by Chad Garcia.
All work on this site was completed by Chad Garcia for the client, Jon and Kim Jackson.
This project demonstrates various principles and best practices of web design as contracted for an independent client. The site is composed of four pages that are hyperlinked by a persistent menu populated with buttons at the top of each page. Each page adheres to standards of style, design, navigation, usability, accessibility, and marketing. In order to complete this site I used Dreamweaver to create the HTML and CSS files, Photoshop to edit the images (taken on site by the web designer) and Fireworks for the graphics included on each page.
In order to create the HTML for this page I used a combination of the skills and strategies acquired from the Web Design course curriculum, including an adherence to XHTML standards to ensure the site meets stringent standards of consistency, careful placement of text and graphics, and clearly visible navigational links for ease of use and accessibility.
The CSS for the page was created before the HTML documents, but modified throughout the process of creating the web site to make sure that the site was internally consistent from page to page as well as easily modified by the client, should they decide to change the color scheme, layout or placement of object and text.
I used images taken on site as a cost effective solution. The images were cropped and positioned inline with supporting text. The image resolution was retained because of the nature of the products and purpose of their inclusion on the site. I tried to promote the freshness and local quality of the produce in the pictures. And, since there is little other media on the page I thought this use was justified.
The navigation for this page was created from several elements of graphic design as well as next generation web standards. I used Adobe Fireworks to generate the buttons as well as their rollover transition state, but used CSS3 to dynamically change their appearance when a visitor hovers over the button. The button will slightly fade to indicate that it is active.
I also incorporated external links for social networking sites that the client had already established. These were hyperlinked and made available at the bottom of every page. Furthermore, I added an interactive Google Map to the contact page for a user friendly visual description of the location of the produce stand.
I included a page title for each page and a meta tag with keywords for SEO and marketablity. Additionally, I included tags for all images and links for accessbility and tried to limit the length of each page to make the page more user friendly and the information easily readable.
I'm sure there are improvements that can be made to this site, but I think it demonstrates an array of web design skills and strategies that I have come to learn and hope to refine in future sites.
